Reach, target, and safety schools, explained

These three labels describe your odds of getting into a school — not how famous it is. A school that's a “safety” for one student can be a “reach” for another. The classification depends on how your grades and test scores line up against that school's admitted class, and on its overall admit rate.

The three bands

  • Reach — admission would be a genuine long shot for your profile. Any school admitting under ~15–20% is a reach for almost everyone, no matter how strong.
  • Target — your GPA and test scores sit comfortably inside the school's middle-50% admitted range, and its admit rate isn't punishing. A likely but not guaranteed yes.
  • Safety — you're above the admitted range and the admit rate is high, so admission is very likely. A true safety also has to be affordable — a school you can't pay for isn't a safety.

How to classify a school

Line up your SAT/ACT and GPA against the school's published middle-50% range, then temper it with the overall admit rate. Above the 75th percentile at a high-admit school? Safety. Inside the range at a moderately selective school? Target. Below the range, or at a sub-15% school? Reach. One caveat: at large public flagships, the overall admit rate can look friendlier than reality for out-of-state applicants, because in-state students fill most seats.

How many of each

Aim for a spread — a rough guide is 4 reaches, 4 targets, and 2–3 safeties. The safeties are the most important and the most skipped: they're what guarantee you land somewhere you're happy with. (More on sizing in how many colleges to apply to.)
